1939年11月17日，德國法西斯匪徒，侵入捷克斯洛伐克屠殺了布拉格大學9名學生和2名教授，同時其他名校的男女學生也遭到了機槍的掃射、毆打和監禁。

為了在大學生中倡導追求和平、民主、自由和進步，為了控訴暴徒血腥的罪惡行徑，紀念反法西斯的大學生運動，1946年，來自世界各國的學生代表將每年11月17日定為世界學生日，又稱國際學生日、世界大學生節。
