use, apply, avail, employ, utilize

這組詞均含有“使用”或“利用”之意。

use

強調利用人或物作為工具。

He used up all his resources in experimenting with the new paint.他為實驗新的涂料，花光了一切錢財。

apply

指把某物或某種方法、原理等加以應用。

We should not only know the theory but also know how to apply it to practice.我們不僅要知道理論，還要知道怎樣把理論應用于實踐。

avail

指使用就近的或他人給予的東西，或使別人為自己提供服務。

I don’t think complaints will avail you much.我覺得抱怨對你沒多大用處。

We avail ourselves of every opportunity to speak English.我們利用一切機會講英語。

employ

指使用未被利用的東西;用于人時表示雇用。

He doesn’t  know how to employ his energy and time.他不知道該怎么利用他的精力和時間。

utilize

指充分發揮某物的作用，使無用的東西變有用，或使人或物有新用途。

She hopes to utilize her artistic talents in the job.她希望在工作中發揮她的藝術才能。

tired, exhausted, fatigued, weary, worn out

這組詞均含有“疲憊的”的意思。

tired

可指因體力或腦力消耗太多而需要休息，還可指因長期做某事而失去興趣。

Henry was so tired that he went to bed immediately after he got home.亨利很疲憊，一到家就上床睡覺去了。

exhausted

表達的疲憊程度最強，指因勞累過度而精疲力竭

The exhausted engineer fell asleep on the bus.精疲力竭的工程師在公共汽車上睡著了。

fatigued

所表達的疲勞程度比tired和weary強，表示由于過度勞累而引起疲乏，不能再繼續下去。

He felt fatigued and didn’t want to say a single word.他疲憊不堪，不想說一句話。

Weary

語氣比tired強，指由于長時間努力工作或由于做單一的事而引起疲倦。

After a long and weary wait, the plane finally came to take them back.經過漫長而又令人疲乏的等待后，飛機終于來接他們回去了。

worn out

這個詞不太正式，多用于口語。

The troops were worn out after winning the battle.戰后,部隊疲憊不堪。
