它是個動詞，首先，它有支付得起，買得起, 擔負得起的意思：

I can’t afford a decent car. 我買不起一輛好車。

Could we afford a holiday this summer? 今年夏天我們有錢去度一次假嗎？/我們有時間去渡一次假嗎？

We can not afford the time. 我們抽不出時間。

Can you afford all the expenses studying in America？你支付得起在美國學習的所有費用嗎？

Few could afford the luxury. 很少有人買得起這種奢侈品。

另外，afford后面還可以加動詞ing形式，或動詞不定式，表示承擔不起做某事的后果，冒。。。之險，一般和can或 could連用：

I can’t afford to neglect my work. 我不能疏忽我的工作。

She couldn’t afford to displease her boss. 她得罪不起她的上司。

I can’t afford losing my job. 我可不能失掉這份工作。

We couldn’t afford telling the truth. 我們可不能把真相說出來。

最后，afford還有供給，給予的意思（正式的場合）：

It will afford me great pleasure to have dinner with you. 和你共進晚餐，是我極大的榮興。
