人生如詩

I think that, from a biological standpoint, human life almost reads like a poem.

我以為，從生物學角度看，人的一生恰如詩歌。

It has its own rhythm and beat, its internal cycles of growth and decay.

人生自有其韻律和節奏，自有內在的生成與衰亡。

No one can say that a life with childhood, manhood and old age is not a beautiful arrangement;

人生有童年、少年和老年，誰也不能否認這是一種美好的安排，

the day has its morning, noon and sunset, and the year has its seasons, and it is good

一天要有清晨、正午和日落，一年要有四季之分，如此才好。

that it is so. There is no good or bad in life, except what is good according to its own season.

人生本無好壞之分，只是各個季節有各自的好處。

And if we take this biological view of life and try to live according to the seasons, no one but a conceited fool or an impossible idealist can deny that human life can be lived like a poem.

如若我們持此種生物學的觀點，并循著季節去生活，除了狂妄自大的傻瓜和無可救藥的理想主義者，誰能說人生不能像詩一般度過呢。

We Are on a Journey

人在旅途

Wherever you are, and whoever you maybe, there is one thing in which you and I are just alike at this moment, and in all the moments of our existence. We are not at rest; we are on a journey, our life is a movement, a tendency, a steady, ceaseless progress towards an unseen goal. We are gaining something, or losing something, everyday. Even when our position and our character seem to remain precisely the same, they are changing. For the mere advance of time is a change. It is not the same thing to have a bare field in January and in July, the season makes the difference. The limitations that are childlike in the child are childish in the man.

無論你在何處，無論你是何人，此刻，而且在我們生命的每時每刻，你與我有一點是類似的。我們不是在休息，我們在旅途中。生命是一種運動，一種趨勢，一個穩步、持續的通往一個未知目標的過程。每天，我們都在獲得，或失去。盡管我們的地位和性格看起來好像一點都沒變，但是它們在變化。因為時光的流逝本身是一種變化。在一月和七月擁有一片貧瘠的土地是不同的，是季節本身帶來了變化。孩童時可愛的缺點到了成人時便成了幼稚。

Everything that we do is a step in one direction or another, even the failure to do something is in itself a deed. It sets us forward or backward. The action of the negative pole of a magnetic needle is just as real as the action of the positive pole. To decline is to accept – the other alternative.

我們做的每件事都是邁向一個或另外一個方向，甚至“什么都沒做”本身也是一種行為，它讓我們前進或倒退。一棵磁針的陰極的作用與陽極是一樣的。拒絕即接受??接受反面。

Are you nearer to your port today than you were yesterday? Yes, -- you must be a little nearer to some port or other; for since your ship was first lunched upon the sea of life, you have never been still for a single moment; the sea is too deep, you could not find an anchorage if you would. There can be no pause until you come into port.

你今天比昨天更加接近你的目標了嗎？是的，你肯定是離一個或另一個碼頭或更近一些了。因為自從你的小船從生命的海洋上啟航時，你沒有哪一刻是停止的。大海是這樣深，你想拋錨時找不到地方。在你駛入碼頭之前，你不可能停留。

The World as I See It

我的世界觀

How strange is the lot of us mortals! Each of us is here for a brief sojourn; for what purpose he knows not, though he sometimes thinks he senses it. But without deeper reflection one knows from daily life that one exists for other people—first of all for those upon whose smiles and well-being our own happiness is wholly dependent, and then for the many, unknown to us, to whose destinies we are bound by the ties of sympathy. A hundred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life are based on the labors of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am still receiving. I am strongly drawn to a frugal life and am often oppressively aware that I am engrossing an undue amount of the labor of my fellowmen. I regard class distinctions as unjustified and, in the last resort, based on force. I also believe that a simple and unassuming life is good for everybody, physically and mentally.

我們這些肉體凡胎是多么奇怪?。∶總€人來到這個世上都只作短暫停留，究竟為了什么目的卻無從知曉，雖然有時覺得自己好像有所感悟。但是，無需深入思考，僅從日常生活就可明白，人是為他人而存在的——首先是為這樣一些人：他們的歡笑、健康和福祉與我們的幸福息息相關；其次是為那些為數眾多的陌生人，因為同情他們，使得我們與他們的命運聯系在了一起。每一天，我都上百次地提醒自己，我的精神和物質生活都是建立在他人(包括生者和死者)的勞動基礎上，對于我已經得到和正在得到的一切，我必須盡力給以相同程度的回報。我深深向往一種儉樸的生活，由于經常意識到自己占用了同胞太多的勞動而心有不安。我認為階級區分是不正當的，其最終的達成方式常常訴諸暴力。我還認為，無論是在身體上還是心理上，過一種簡單而不鋪張浪費的生活對每個人都有好處。

別樣的青春

Man's youth is a wonderful thing: it is so full of anguish and of magic and he never comes to know it as it is, until it has gone from him forever. It is the thing he cannot bear to lose, it is the thing whose passing he watches with infinite sorrow and regret, it is the thing whose loss with a sad and secret joy, the thing he would never willingly relive again, could it be restored to him by any magic.

青春奇妙無窮,充滿魅力,充滿痛楚.青春年少的時候根本不知青春為何物,直到青春一去不復返了才對青春有了真正的認識.誰都想讓青春永駐,不忍青春離去;眼睜睜地看著青春流逝,心中會涌起無窮的憂傷和惋惜;青春的失去是人們永遠感到悲哀的事;青春的失去是人們真正覺得悲喜交集的事;即便奇跡出現青春復蘇,誰都不會心甘情愿重度青春的歲月.

Why is this? The reason is that the strange and bitter miracle of life is nowhere else so evident as in our youth. And what is the essence of that strange and bitter miracle of life which we feel so poignant, so unutterable, with such a bitter pain and joy, when we are young? It is this: that being rich, we are so poor; that being mighty, we can yet have nothing; that seeing, breathing, smelling, tasting all around us the impossible wealth and glory of this earth, feeling with an intolerable certitude that the whole structure of the enchanted life – the most fortunate, wealthy, good, and happy life that any man has ever known – is ours – is ours at once, immediately and forever, the moment that we choose to take a step, or stretch a hand, or say a word- we yet know that we can really keep, hold, take, and possess forever- nothing. All passes; nothing lasts: the moment that we put our hand upon it , it melts away like smoke, is gone forever, and the snake is eating at our heart again; we see then what we are and what our lives must come to.

為什么如此?因為在青春時代,生活充滿了奇特而辛酸的不可思議的事.我們在青春年少時帶著悲喜交集的心情,十分強烈而不可名狀地感受到人生的奇特辛酸/不可思議的經歷.其實質是什么呢?　其實質是這樣的:青春年少的時候,雖然殷實富足,卻非常貧窮;雖然力氣強大,卻一無所有;世間的富貴榮華觸目皆是,簡直可以呼吸到,聞到嗅到,還可以品嘗到,心中的自信按捺不住,深切地感受到整個被陶醉了的生活----人類迄今為止所直到的最幸運/最富有的美好幸福的生活,只要我們決定向前邁步,奮發努力,便立即歸我們所有了,并將永遠屬于我們.然而,我們知道,我們真的永遠不能抓到什么,永遠不能獲得什么,永遠不能占有什么.一切匆匆過去,蕩然無存.我們一出手它就煙消云散,飄然而去,一去不復返了.于是,心中泛起陣陣隱痛,看到了自己真實的面孔,看到了自己未來生活的必然走向。
